1.80 lac farmers families are connected with the sugar mills in the State. Punjab Cooperative Sugar Mills are providing services to the farmers such as disease free seed, pest control management timely purchase of their produce and making them timely payment to encourage them to  grow more quality sugarcane in the State.
A dedicated Sugar Cane Research Institute i.e. Guru Nank Dev Sugarcane Research & Development Institute has been set up at Kalanaur (Gurdaspur) for promotion of research & development activities in the field of sugarcane. 
The institute will not only providing training to the farmers engaged in sugarcane cultivation about the latest techniques of sugarcane cultivation but also provide pure seed of elite sugarcane varieties having higher per acre yield so as to enhance income of farmers.
