The Nawanshahr Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd., Nawanshahr

Establishment and Capacity

Registered on 26th April 1956, The Nawanshahr Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd. began operations with a crushing capacity of 1000 TCD, which was enhanced to 1250 TCD in 1967. The mill commenced its first crushing season in 1967-68.

● Total Land Area: 29 acres
● Further Expansion: The crushing capacity was increased to 2500 TCD in 1988-89.

Over the years, the mill has received numerous National-level awards, recognizing its performance and contributions to the cooperative sugar industry.

Co-generation Plant

In line with the Punjab Government’s directive to enhance the mill’s revenue, a 12 MW Co-generation Plant was set up under a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model.
● MOU Signed With: M/s Saraya Industries Ltd. (M/s NPPL), New Delhi
● Year of MOU: 2009
● Production Commenced: 2017
● The plant is fully integrated with the sugar mill, contributing to improved operational efficiency and additional revenue streams.

Modernization Efforts

To further increase operational efficiency, a comprehensive modernization and upgradation plan was formulated in two phases, based on a technical expert committee's recommendations:
● Phase 1: Executed by M/s Kay Bouvet Engg. Ltd. — successfully completed, including successful machinery trials.
● Phase 2: Yet to be implemented.

Tissue Culture Laboratory

The Nawanshahr Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd. established Punjab’s first Tissue Culture Laboratory in September 1994, aimed at the production of high-quality sugarcane seed varieties.
● Collaborating Institutions: Sugarfed, Punjab and Biotechnology Centre, PAU Ludhiana
● Production Initiated: 1995-96

Doaba Alco Chemicals Plant

To enhance financial sustainability, the mill commissioned a 40 KLPD Alco Chemicals Plant in 1996.
● Licensed to Produce: Industrial Alcohol and Rectified Spirit (D-2 license)
