An overview about the mill

The Morinda Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd., Morinda (Rupnagar)

The Morinda Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd. was registered under the Punjab State Cooperative Act, 1961, with Registration No. 39 dated 10.04.1956. The mill was commissioned in the 1962–63 crushing season with an installed capacity of 1000 TCD (Tonnes of Cane per Day), spread over 66.5 acres of land.

Capacity Enhancements:

● 1978: Expansion from 1000 TCD to 1250 TCD through the installation of a parallel milling tandem.
● 1987–88: Further expansion from 1250 TCD to 2500 TCD using the TRPF (Toothed Roller Pressure Feeder) system.

Socio-Economic Impact

Since its establishment, the mill has significantly uplifted the standard of living of local farmers and played a crucial role in strengthening the cooperative movement in the region. Although the mill has faced sugarcane shortages in recent years, consistent efforts by management and field staff have ensured stable operations close to capacity.

Technical Infrastructure

Boiler Station

● 2 x 16 Tons/hr @ 14 kg/cm²
● 2 x 20 Tons/hr @ 21 kg/cm²
● Total Steam Generation Capacity: 72 Tons/hr

However, the existing boilers have poor thermal efficiency and are unreliable, with a fuel-to-steam ratio of 1:2, leading to operational challenges.

Power House

● Total Generation Capacity: 2850 KW

○ 1 x 2000 KW (2 MW) Turbine
○ 1 x 850 KW (0.85 MW) Turbine

Due to low-efficiency boilers and turbines, the factory’s internal power generation is insufficient, resulting in a seasonal electricity bill of ₹1.50 to ₹2.00 crore paid to the State Electricity Board. A plan is under consideration to install a new boiler and power turbine to utilize available bagasse and become energy self-sufficient.

Milling Tandem

● 4 three-roller mills (Size: 835x1524 mm)
● Drive Mechanism:

○ Mills 1–3: Driven by 600 DHP single-stage steam turbines at 21 kg/cm² pressure
○ Mill 4: Driven by a 750 HP DC motor

● TRPF Rollers: Driven by AC motors—75 HP for the first mill, 60 HP for the remaining three

Bio-CNG Plant Project (Under Planning):

The mill is planning to set up a Bio-CNG plant for converting press mud and biomass into fuel. A detailed project report prepared by NFCSF, New Delhi proposes:
● Production Capacity: 4000–5000 kg of Bio-CNG per day
● Estimated Cost: ₹16 crore
● Feedstock: 100 TPD Press Mud, Bagasse, and other biomass
This initiative aims to utilize waste effectively, promote clean energy, and diversify revenue streams.
